| Zenith made the best and most popular AM/FM table radios in the U.S. during the 1950s and competed quite well with the elaborate German AM/FM sets of the period. Like the German sets, this medium-size set has good quality speakers -- in this case an 8-inch woofer and two electrostatic tweeters for great sound. The eight-tube chassis is well designed for excellent sensitivity and fidelity on both FM and AM, and this was one of the earlier models to provide AFC to prevent tuning drift on FM. The chassis has been fully restored with all electrolytic and paper capacitors replaced, a silicon rectifier diode in place of the original selenium rectifier, new resistors where needed, a strong set of tubes, all contacts cleaned, and a meticulous RF/IF alignment on both bands for like-new performance. Safety has been improved with the installation of a modern polarized power cord along with power switch circuitry modifications. The knob in the middle of the dial is a tone control to tailor the sound just the way you want it. It's a low mileage chassis, since it was clean and had all its original Zenith tubes (of which I replaced two). The original neon pilot light is still bright. The cabinet shows its age, and the dial ring has some corrosion. If you can tolerate some cosmetic shortcomings, you get a great AM/FM radio at a nice price! 15-1/2"W x 10"H x 8-1/4"D. |
