If you had no electricity in the 1930s your radio choices were mostly little crappy sets, with low power tubes, 4-inch tinny sounding speakers and expensive, throw away batteries to buy. The Zenith folks decided rural people deserved a better choice and produced what I think is the pinnacle of battery sets in the 6V27. This is an absolutely gorgeous and amazing radio. The cabinet is huge and ornate with a very striking speaker grille design, sided by Zebra wood pillars and fronted with beautiful walnut burl. I gave it a nice, slick finish. It has a dedicated RF amplifier tube and a push-pull output stage driving an 8-inch speaker. Receiver sensitivity is better than most AC sets. It has the classic Zenith black dial with vernier tuning. Broadcast and two shortwave bands. My usual thorough chassis restoration produced a very good performer, with especially good shortwave reception. To top it off, I fabricated a 110V AC supply that fits under the chassis. You can still run it off 6V if you want. While it has the usual small ding or blemish here and there, this is an amazing example of this model. Six have sold on the Attic topping out at $775.
