Philco 89 (1933)
(wood tube cathedral radio)

Philco 89 (1933)

THIS RADIO HAS BEEN SOLD!

Philco sold the popular model 89 with five different cabinet styles over a three-year period. This is the second cabinet type, introduced in late 1933. This style is instantly recognizable as one of Philco's classic cathedrals. The six-tube chassis is a superhet with RF stage and AVC, giving it a familiar tuning and volume behavior similar to modern radios. Although the model 89 chassis is sometimes a challenging one to get working, this one has been thoroughly restored and plays like new, with excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and sound quality. All capacitors have been replaced, as well as many resistors, and the tubes are strong. A meticulous RF/IF alignment was done. The original 8-inch speaker is in nice shape (with new wires to replace the fraying originals), and a new power cord and fuse have been installed. Knobs and escutcheon are original; the cabinet has been nicely refinished, along with new grille cloth and a good quality reproduction dial. This radio displays well and works well enough to be used daily. 16"H x 13"W x 9-1/4"D.
