Philco 75 "Hippo" (Canada-1948)
(plastic tube table radio)

Philco 75 "Hippo" (Canada-1948)

THIS RADIO HAS BEEN SOLD!

The Philco "hippo" models have long been a favorite among collectors, because of their impressive lighted dial using an early form of fiber optic light diffusion through clear plastic. While plentiful, this particular model is somewhat more rare as it is a Canadian produced model 75, which is equivalent to the US model 48-460. There are a few subtle differences, mainly the dial lamp mount utilizing a "night light" bulb that is attached to the dial pointer so the light follows as you tune via a small mirror mounted above it. A very cool effect in a darkened room! The six-tube chassis has been gone through with all new filter and paper capacitors, resistors changed that were out of tolerance, strong tested set of tubes, new line cord, controls cleaned and lubricated. It plays well across the AM band with its loop antenna. Original back is intact and in nice shape. The cabinet is all original natural finish with one minor stress crack on the bottom around a chassis mounting hole that has been reinforced inside. 12"W x 7-1/2"H x 6-3/4"D. I offer a quantity discount on my radios: take any two priced at $129 for $240 total (shipping not included).
